"POWER"

ORIGIN
Songs only come through me when I am ready to walk the talk of the song’s message. Every song I’ve written has encouraged me to live the lyrics out loud, essentially changing my life for the better. It’s a form of writing myself into existence.
“Power” is no different for me.
Releasing "Power" has been a journey of acceptance, love and trusting the process. The song’s origins began nearly two years ago, at a time when I felt deeply connected to the lyrics, but I was in the midst of struggling with my mental health, feeling stressed and burnt out. It was time to heal. I decided to stop striving for the external accolades that I thought would give me power, but instead required me to abandon too much of myself: Major record label deal. Family approval. “Perfect” body. Impressive streaming numbers. Social media numbers.
I finally understood that the power I’m singing about is the power that emerges when we learn to not only accept who we are but to truly love and be in awe of who we already are. No longer do I need to abandon myself to run to external sources of shiny excitement. The true accolade is seeing my life as a gift, and honoring who I am now. Hence the lyrics: “You’re so beautiful I won’t leave you again.
The practice of building ease into my life helped the emergence of an ancient wisdom and an awareness of the rhythms of my depression and anxiety. The path of healing led me to face my clinical depression, seek out a diagnosis and explore adding medication to my meditation, yoga, walking, and breathwork practices. The medication, paired with my existing holistic methods of wellness, has been changing my life. I can feel my posture shifting. I am more present in my conversations. My laughter is fuller. My intuition is louder. My ability to speak my truth is stronger.

I AM IN MY POWER.
As I've become more loving with myself, I’ve been able to invest more deeply in my personal relationships. My friends and I have leaned on each other to overcome personal obstacles, while also fighting for love and democracy amidst tense politics and suffering around the world.
Art and community give me the energy I need to continue showing up in this world, and I hope the song's uplifting vibe can bring a similar jolt of energy into my listeners' days.
SELF LOVE+ COMMUNITY CARE = POWER
Throughout the release of “Power” I feel honored to bring awareness to Vital Voices, a partner of the Somebody’s Beloved Project.
We will be highlighting and celebrating their work to stand with the women of Ukraine and uplift women leaders in the region.
The Somebody’s Beloved Fund will also make a contribution to Vital Voices’ Urgent Assistance Fund and new Crisis Response Initiative.
May this song be a reminder that true power does not lie in bullets and bombs, but in brotherhood/sisterhood/siblinghood, and the beauty we see in ourselves and each other.
As with all of my recent releases, a portion of the proceeds from this song will benefit the Somebody’s Beloved Fund.

"POWER"

Take the power back baby
Fall so in love with your inner lady
No sense chasing what you could’ve been
Let these battles make a champion
Say hello like it’s the first time that you met
You’re so beautiful I won't leave you again
Oooh
I’m finally seeing who I am
Ooh
I hold my heart in my own hands
I feel the power coming back
Power! Power!
No matter your features
We’re all the same tender loving creatures
Taking steps upon the earth
Don’t need anyone to tell you what you’re worth
Say hello like it’s the first time that you met
You’re so beautiful I won't leave you again
Oooh
I’m finally seeing who I am
Ooh
I hold my heart in my own hands
I feel the power coming back
Power! Power!
Say hello if it’s the first time that you’ve met
She’s so beautiful learn to love her again
Power! Power!
Power! Power!
Power! Power!
Power! Power!
